Background :
In Morocco, public
lighting is generally the second largest budget item, after payroll, and the
first line item of energy expenditures in municipalities. Public lighting alone accounts for between 30% and 40%
of the energy consumption of a local government. To offset the
continuous increase in energy consumption of public lighting equipment,
municipalities are forced to take initiatives that allow them to optimize their
energy bills.
Goal
The goal is to
significantly reduce the energy bill. Public lighting
management and operational project management will be carried out through
delegated management using private
expertise.
Achievements
- A pilot project of public lighting from solar
sources was carried out within the framework of the Moroccan-Chinese
cooperation: it aims at the installation of 300 units of solar streetlights in
the villages within the jurisdiction of the commune of Ain El Beida and on a
stretch of the Fez-Sefrou road. This project has enabled the rural municipality
to make savings on the consumption of electricity produced from conventional
energy, helped break the isolation of the landlocked rural population, and also
contributed to ensuring the security of the population in the region.
- The year 2015 saw the establishment of the first
Local Development Company in the municipality of Salé as part of the PPP model for the
management of public lighting : the goals is
to equip all the electricity poles of the city of Salé with LED lamps ;
- A training session for 15 executives trained in
energy efficiency in the field of street lighting was held by AMEE;
- AMEE has developed its training and
demonstration platform by setting up new test benches necessary
for tests and practical work (Low Voltage interconnection, street
lighting);
- Integration of energy
efficiency standards in the municipal specifications for public lighting.
