Program for the generalization of solar water heaters

Background

Morocco enjoys a significant solar deposit that amounts to more than 3,000 hours per year of sunshine, namely radiation of more than 5.6 KW per hour, per square meter and per day. In order to promote the solar thermal sector, the solar water heater development program aims at increasing the mobilization of national energy resources, improving the national electrical load curve, and preserving the environment.

The actions undertaken within the framework of this program focus both from the quality standpoint and from the standpoint of promotion and mechanism of support to the development of the program.

This program will also contribute to the development of a local production sector, to the creation of new activities, new economies, trades and employment on site, thus allowing the emergence of a national market.

Goal

To onstall an area of 1.7 million  of solar panels by 2020, representing a cumulative energy saving of around 100 Ktoe.

Supporting activities:

  • Reduction of the VAT rate applied to solar water heaters (SWH) from 14 to 10% under the 2015 Finance Law ;
  • Establishment of a financing mechanism ;
  • Training of installers leading to the granting of a degree ;
  • The Labeling of the SWHs that should be marketed in the domestic market;
  • Communication and awareness-raising activities;

     Contribution to the development of standards for solar water heaters.

    Achievements

    v    The equipment of Ibn Rochd Casablanca University Hospital of a solar facility for the production of hot water

    This project is part of the partnership between the Agency and the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Territory and Sea, which aims to produce domestic hot water at the Ibn Rochd Hospital Center in Casablanca.

    This project allowed for the installation of 752 square meters of solar collectors, with a production of 55 800 liters of hot water, which represents 70% of the needs and an investment 2 946 474 Moroccan Dirhams (MADs) (about 270, 000 Euros or 307,000 US$).

    v    Improved housing conditions in social centers in the Beni Mellal-Khénifra region

    This project is part of the partnership between the Agency and the Beni Mellal-Khénifra Region, which aims to improve housing conditions in social public institutions through solar thermal projects for the production of hot water.

    The project has enabled the development of seven solar water heaters to provide hot water to seven social centers in the Beni Mellal - Khenifra region with an investment of 400,000 Dirhams (about 36 700 Euros / 42 000 US$).
