Energy upgrade of mosques


Background

Within the framework of the enhancement of the energy efficiency, the program of energy upgrade of the mosques was put in place by the signing of the agreement on April 08, 2014, between the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment, the Energy Investment Company (S.I.E), and the National Agency for Renewable Energy Development and Energy Efficiency (ADEREE). That agreement defines the framework for intervention of each of the parties concerned.

The program includes low-energy lamp lighting, solar water heaters, thermal management of mosques, and the use of photovoltaic solutions for power generation.

Goal                    

This program aims to disseminate the techniques and applications of renewable energy and energy efficiency in mosques through the installation of equipment to meet the needs in terms of electricity, hot water, and efficient lighting.

The program has a double objective: to reduce the energy consumption of mosques and to raise awareness of energy efficiency techniques among citizens.

Measures carried out

Among the actions carried out in this program:

  • Development of a model Book of Specifications for construction;
  • Organization of 6 training sessions on RTCM for 100 managers and technicians in the central and regional services of the MHAI (Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs);
  • Organization of 14 sensitization workshops for 460 imams and regional actors of the Ministry.
  • Preparation of 4 technical guides for renewable energy equipment in mosques;
  • Energy upgrade of 100 mosques spread over nine cities;
  • Realization of an inventory (energy diagnosis) of 600 mosques
  • Organization of ten sensitization sessions for the benefit of imams, “morchidins” and “morchidates” (male and female religious guides) (Number of beneficiaries: 300 people)
  • Establishment of an awareness guide for imams, morchidins, and morchidates;
  • Making of films on energy efficiency in mosques;
  • Finalization of the referential of energy performance label for mosques in Morocco
  • Conducting training sessions on the technologies used are organized for the benefit of the officials of the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs at the regional level;
  • Training sessions on building energy audits according to the ISO 50002 standard have been organized in the RabatTangiers and Agadir regions;
  • Conducting of 10 energy audits in mosques.
  • Development of a special information system for the new mosques to be built.
